MBB vs SBC contest rundown…

Last Sunday the first ever Maroubra Bodyboard Club versus Sydney Bodyboard Club contest was  held at Whale beach on Sydney’s northern beaches. Dozens of competitors from both clubs, as well as spectators turned out to witness some high quality bodyboarding in some fun 2 foot peaks. The competition was fierce but always in good spirit and the final results saw SBC come out on top. Congratulations to all the SBC team members and MBB competitors for a great day of bodyboarding! We hope this event becomes an annual fixture!

Tom Rigby wins Port & Winny wins Tour!!

 Port Mac 08 1

Two of our team riders have outperformed the cream of Australia’s bodyboarding crop, blitzing the Human Australasian Titles and the Human Port Mac Pro. Tom Rigby has taken home the Pro tour event, beating Dave Winchester, Michael Novy and Nathan Branch in the 30 minute final, while Dave Winchester takes home the Human Australasian Tour Champion title, making him Aussie Champ in 2008! Congratulations to both our boys who both deserve all the acclaim they receive!

Port Mac 08 2

The Pro Mens final consisted of Tour Leader Dave Winchester (NSW), Nathan Branch (Port Macquarie), Tom Rigby (QLD) and Micheal Novy (QLD). Tom Rigby, competing in his first ever final in a pro tour event managed to steal the show, winning the pro mens final with an epic display of surfing. “That was my first pro tour final ever, the waves were pretty inconsistent but the 30 minute extended heat allowed everyone a chance to get the best waves” said Rigby.

Port Mac 08 3

Rigby, from Mermaid Beachin Queensland reveled in the opportunity to surf with some of the worlds top bodyboarders. “It was such a great experience to be able to surf with the pro’s like Winny and Novy”. Tom will now go into preparation for the big wave winter season in Hawaii and will begin the IBA World Tour in February where he will compete in the Pipeline Pro.

GCBC Newsletter

Gold Coast Bodyboard Club
(Coolangatta Bodyboard Club Inc)

Newsletter

7th September 2008

Duranbah

With weather conditions not looking favourable for Sunday we kept a careful eye on weather web sites all week to determine a safe comp for all. Conditions looked HUGE earlier on in the week and we have a duty of care to ensure the safety of all competitors. By Friday the swell size had been downgraded and we were ready to go for our 2nd last comp of the year.

Our final comp on 12th October will see some competitors fight it out for the final four places in most divisions. Opens is hotting up even further with the three main contenders battling it out for the Trip to Hawaii sponsored by Bodyboarders Surf Co @ Coolangatta. The Twist still needs to be included in the tallies so who knows which rider will be Jetting off to Hawaii?

All results for our next comp will be held over until Preso Arvo/Night on 8th November, so keep this date free to help us celebrate the overall winners in each division and a great year at GCBC. More details will be posted on our web site shortly so stay tuned.

Mick and I would like to take this opportunity to wish all competitors attending Nationals, the very best of luck for next week @ Port Macquarie. With 17 of the 27 strong team representing Queensland hailing from GCBC it makes us proud and we would like to thank you all for your commitment and dedication, not only to the sport but the Club that supports you.

On a more serious note, one of our well known members (Jimmy Williamson) had a serious brush with Meningitis recently but it was great to see Jimmy well and truly back on the road to recovery and riding up a storm in both Junior and Open divisions. Jimmy is now well enough to attend Nationals next week and we wish him luck along with the rest of the team.

Special Award gift vouchers from BSC Coolangatta were awarded to:-

Kev Gil and Jimmy Williamson – Move of the day - Judges decision for move of the day was too hard to call so we went with the crowd cheer factor. Both Kev and Jimmy made some spectacular moves in the ARS department and as it became too difficult to call, we filed it in the TO HARD BASKET and awarded them both. Well done guys and keep up the good work.

Jaymie Jones – Judging – Jaymie put in a solid day at the Judging Tent which was a vital contribution to the day and adds to the smooth running our comps. Well done Jaymie and your commitment to the club is greatly appreciated.

A big thanks AGAIN to Brett, the BBQ chef and his mini helper (Jack) for feeding and watering the hungry crowd. Your culinary expertise is always welcome and appreciated by all.

BSC gift vouchers this month were also awarded to the winners in each division with results being:-

Grommets

Dylan McAskil

Cadets

James Meth
Lloyd Vernals
Conor Nelson
Jordan Putland

Opens

October 12th will see our final comp for the year with some very interesting additional events scheduled to add to the excitement, so be there to witness the spectacle. More details will be posted shortly on our web site www.qabonline.com regarding our end of year Preso, so keep an eye out for updates, comp results and photos.

I will see some of you next week @ Nationals and all others on the 12th of October.

Winny wins the Redback Pro in SA!!

Redback pro 08 1
BSC team rider Dave Winchester moved one step closer to becoming the 2008 Human Pro Tour champion with a win in the Redback Pro presented by NAB over the weekend.

Winny’s main rival in the title race is Mitch Rawlins and bothe riders (along with Brad Hughes) bolted back to Oz after the Sintra Portugal Pro to get some valuable points in the 4 Star event. Unfortunately for Mitch he was eliminated in the quarters..

Queenslander Michael Novy and West Australian Brad Hughes both ripped the punchy wedges finishing third and forth in the final.

Central Coaster Dave Crowley has to settle for another bridesmaid finish coming a close second (again…)

Redback pro 08 2

Overall it was another great weekend in SA and congrats to Tim Doman again for all his hard work and effort.

Next stop : Port MacQuarie - Get your entries in NOW for the richest event of 2008.!!!!

2008 Sintra Portugal Pro Results…

 Winny at Sintra 08

BSC Team Rider Dave Winchester flying high at Sintra on one of the earlier days of competition, before the conditions deteriorated.

The final day of competition in portugal was held in the sort of waves that European bodyboarders excel. Unfortunately for the Aussies, the 1-2 foot peaks provided testing conditions. Despite this, BSC team rider Dave Winchester, and the Gold Coast’s Ryan Hardy made it through to the semi finals, where neither could milk the small waves quite enough to advance to the final. Avalon’s Ben Player did, however make the final, only securing 4th place behind Manuel Centeno, Pierre Louis-Costes and winner Guilherme Tamega.

Tamega is really making a big impact on the World Tour again in 2008 and he now looks to be the man to beat for the 2008 World Title.

Dave Winchester gets second in WA!

Western Australia’s most prestigious and longest running professional bodyboarding event, the EBB Pro was completed over the weekend, with some of the country’s best bodyboarding talent converging on the South-West corner of the state. The seventh event on the Bodyboarding Australasia Pro Tour will go down in the record books as one of its finest, as a combination of clean offshore winds and pumping swell greeted competitors.

EBB Pro - Smith’s Beach WA. July 26th – 27th 2008. Bodyboard Australasia Pro Tour Event # 7.

South-West WA delivers sun, surf, and some simply epic performances, as one of the events of the year unfolds.
The ‘2 star’ rated event which offered a total prize pool of $4000 culminated with Queensland’s Michael Novy taking out one of the biggest wins of his career. “Im stoked to have finally won an event, it makes the trip West all that much sweeter”, said Novy who secured his win in the dying minutes of the final with an 8.33 ride that he backed up with a 7.33 for a combined total of 15.66 out of a possible 20.00.

Novy took the title by less than one point from Dave Winchester (Curl Curl, NSW) who finished with a combined total of 15.00 points. The old saying close enough is good enough was not the case for Winchester who had to settle for second place, after looking to be the man to beat early. ‘Winny’ as his know to his peers on tour scored an 8.00 ride in the first few minutes of the final, and looked to have the win stitched up after locking away a 7.00 ride as a back up.

Former WA resident and long time pin up boy of the sport Ryan Hardy finished the final in third place, but wasn’t at all disappointed with the result. “It was great to get back to WA before I shoot off to Chile’, it’s good to be a part of the only WA event and I was definitely impressed with how smooth everything went and the hard work done by all” said Hardy, who will continue living the dream in his pursuit of World Title glory that has thus far eluded him.

Gracetown local Ben Delfs finished in fourth place, struggling to find the waves he required. Delfs had been one of the form surfers of the day winning each of his heats on his way to the final. Delfs provided the highlight of the day with a massive back flip that had the whole beach in disbelief, finishing the event as the highest rated WA competitor.

The 25 minute final was somewhat wave starved compared to earlier heats where Smith’s Beach produced some solid sets in the 3-4 foot range, allowing competitors to weave through some seriously deep tubes, as well as attack the lip with real ferociousness. With a diminishing swell and strong winds forecast for Sunday, event officials decided to make the most of the great conditions on offer Saturday and pushed through the pro divisions in one day. Competition Director Ian ‘Goldy’ Goldthorpe commented, “The forecast for Sunday was looking really bad, so we made the most of what was on offer and the guys seemed really pleased with the outcome.” It made for a viewing spectacular; great waves coupled with awesome riders, it was like nothing the WA bodyboarding scene had witnessed before.

Some worthy performances included that of Gold Coast ripper Tom Rigby who made it through to the semi finals with flair and style that has him touted as the next ‘big thing’. WA local’s Adam Luehman (Bunbury), Ian Fergusson (Scarborough) and Brad Hughes (Trigg) also flew the flag on home soil, all made it through to the semi finals with impressive and innovative surfing.

The EBB Pro Drop Knee final was a two horse race with Trent Sanford (Perth) showing great skills and taking out the title form close mate Kim Feast (Gracetown). Sanford and Feast went blow for blow, but it was Sanford’s huge repertoire of manoeuvres that guaranteed him the win ahead of Feast in second, Mark Boehm (Scarborough) in third and Liam O’Keefe (Trigg) in fourth.

It is so good to have a number of real superstars of the bodyboarding world on hand including Ryan Hardy, Dave Winchester, Brad Hughes, and Chad Jackson, it provided a huge opportunity for some of WA’s up and comers to see and meet their idols first hand and continue the sports development into the future. 2008 has seen the EBB Pro’s profile grow to one of Australia’s biggest bodyboarding events and is assured of becoming bigger and better in 2009. The great waves that WA has to offer along with a bigger prize pool and higher ratings points will see the event firmly placed on the minds of Australia’s best bodyboarders in the future.

The forecast of gale force winds and a dropping swell rang true today, with the third and final round of the EBB State Bodyboard Series having to be postponed today due to horrendous conditions. The event will be rescheduled for the coming weeks with the National Titles approaching fast.

FINAL RESULTS:

Pro Men>

1st – Michael Novy (QLD) – 15.66 pts
2nd – Dave Winchester (NSW) – 15.00 pts
3rd – Ryan Hardy (QLD) – 13.73 pts
4th – Ben Delfs (WA) – 12.14 pts

Pro DK>

1st – Trent Sanford (WA) – 15.44 pts
2nd – Kim Feast (WA) - 13.60 pts
3rd – Mark Boehm (WA) – 9.17 pts
4th – Liam O’Keefe (WA) – 6.16 pts
