WBA Event THIS WEEKEND @ Whale Beach

This Saturday, the 9th April, the Milkshakes Womens Bodyboarding Association (WBA) will be holding an event at Whaley Beach, on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. Girls and ladies of all ages and abilities are encouraged to come along to the event. There’s awesome prizes to be won from WBA sponsors - Hive swimwear, Milkshakes bodyboards, Hooda custom designed Hoodies, and BSC Bodyboarders Surf Co.

And for some added fun, we have created a theme for this event, which is tight and bright! We are encouraging everyone to come along dressed in their tighest and brightest fluoro 80’s clothing and wetsuits!

We will be having a beach BBQ, and music playing. So everyone is welcome to come along and watch, or join in!

This event was scheduled for Anzac Day 25th April, but had to be cancelled due to the large East swell that hit Sydney’s Northern Beaches. This saturday there is another swell forecast, but not as large, and from a better southerly direction. With clear skies and offshore winds predicted, saturday is looking to be an awesome day!

The WBA is a non-profit organisation that holds fun club competitions all over NSW, with beginners to advanced divisions, to cater for girls of all abilities. There are currently around 25 members of the club.

Northern Beaches locals and IBA Australasian Tour competitors Mandy Zieren, Zoe Edwards, Julia Heasman and Sylve Colless have all confirmed they will be coming along to the event on Saturday. Along with many other girls, including elite Australian bodyboarders Lilly Pollard, Emma Roby, Kaitlin Murphy, Emma Cobb, and Nicole Fleming.

All the girls will be on hand to give helpful bodyboarding tips.

Memberships start from $15 for social members, and $50 for competitors.

Any girls interested in joining us at Whaley Beach, please meet us at the Whaley beach carpark at 7.30am. If it appears the swell is too big, we will move the event north to Palm Beach.
The next planned event for WBA will be held at Sundowner Tiona on NSW’s mid North Coast on 1st-2nd August.

Any questions please contact Karleah Lang on: 0408 901 519, and check out www.womensbodyboarding.com for our latest news and updates.

GCBC Comp #3 Report and Photos!

Comp 3 Report.

The start of the comp was greeted with a clean 3 foot clean south swell, however as the day progressed so did the swell along with a treacherous rip that gave many a workout trying to make their way back to the beach.

Standouts included Tom Rigby with the only 10’s across the judges sheets for the day and Jimmy Williamson with a amazing tube ride.

Unfortunately we had to end the comp early as the surf just became far too dangerous and challenging for all competitors.

To finish comp 3 we will start at 6am sharp at the next event (Sunday 10 May) with cadet’s semi 2.

Rawlins wins Rheopaipo Pro!

Written by Terry McKenna

Some of the best bodyboarders from Australia and the world were on hand to compete in round one of the Pro tour to compete for early valued points. The competition ran over three days with the final day dishing up some classic Duranbah wedges. It was also doubled up with the 1st round of the amateur QAB(Queensland Association of Bodyboarding) state championship series.

rheopro09-6

In the Pro Men’s final it ended up being an all QLD affair with local knowledge proving a major advantage on testing Duranbah conditions. Mitch Rawlins had a slow start with Jake Stone slamming a massive backflip of a solid 6 footer landing hard to finish off with a spin and a roll and being the main man to catch. Only to have Joe Clarke quickly fight back whipping a nice stylish ARS(Air Roll Spin). Corey McLeon was next to notch a high scoring wave smashing a full vertical inverted air to land hard in the flats. Mitch showing his long knowledge of the Duranbah waves waited patiently getting bread and butter moves in until the dying moments of the heat when a 6 foot wedge popped up, Mitch was quick to pounce and flew down the face and wacked it hard flying into a full rotation air reverse landing smoothly and pulling off to solute to the screaming spectators who were applauding the fantastic final. Eventually it was Mitch Rawlins from Gold Coast/Western Australia 1st, Jake Stone from Sunshine Coast 2nd, Joe Clarke from Gold Coast 3rd, Corey McClean from Gold Coast 4th

As Mitch Rawlins stated “Duranbah is one of the best suited waves for bodyboarding around Australia! I love coming home every year to compete at Duranbah. But the level of competition is getting so much better and if you’re not on your game you’ll be knocked out.” At the end of the contest it was also confirmed that the last leg of the Pro Tour will wrap-up at Duranbah in November in conjunction with the Australian National Titles of Bodyboarding. Mitch also has to say this “I am also stoked to hear the National Titles and last leg of the Pro Tour will be held here as there is a fantastic arena here(Duranbah) for spectators as you can see by the large amounts that have been around to watch over the weekend. I’ll definitely be back again to compete here!!”

rheopro09-7

In the Pro Drop Knee final it again proved to be an advantage to have local knowledge with Dane Pope from Gold Coast showing a stylish but powerful approach to the powerful Duranbah waves. South African Sacha Specker was the early leader in the final landing a heavy floater and getting some nice smooth cutbacks. But Nathan and Dane were quick to fight back with Nathan getting a great sized wave and digging the rail deep to slam a nice sized cutback. Over half way through the final Dane used his local knowledge to get shacked in the Duranbah green room showing full style as he cruised through the barrel to come out and smash the oncoming section with a nice wack.

The next round of the Rebel Sport IBA Australasian Pro Tour will be held at Soldiers Beach NSW next weekend.

The next event is the Soldiers Beach Pro which starts on Thursday on the NSW Central Coast.

Late entries for this event are still being accepted by calling Terry McKenna on 0401023661

GCBC First Event rundown & results!

The first round for Gold Coast Bodyboard Club 2009 kicked at Duranbah Beach on Sunday 15th March. With waves and weather in our favour, there was a whole lot of ambience surrounding the days events.
The club itself has so much to celebrate this year including a long list of new members as well as new sponsors. Topping that list are the clubs two Major Sponsors: Escape Travel Tweed City & Bodyboarders Surf Co. followed up by the Minor Sponsors: Bakers Delight Coolangatta, Milt Cromptons Meats, Onelife Health & Fitness & Quick Colour Print.

The club is here to support its members as well as their families, so we strongly urge all parents, partners and friends to get involved throughout the year. There will always be plenty of food and drink to go around, as well as activities to keep you amused all day long such as ball sports, music and not to mention helping out with some of the clubs overall roles such tasks as judging or lending a hand on the BBQ.

This year the clubs aim is to start showing its true potential-and with a newly elected committee in place-this is sure to happen. Already the club has worked together to get hold of some much needed new equipment, such as tents, chairs as well a PA System. All of this combined created a really strong atmosphere which clearly marked bodyboardings goals for the future on the Gold Coast as well as Queensland.

The talent within the club this year already has proven to be above standard with a lot of new faces putting up quiet a fight against some of the well known locals looking whom are keen to add some more silverware to their already full shelves. The day itself dished out some fun 2-3ft waves, which the younger competitors took advantage of straight up. The judges were handing out some pretty high scores while the waves were still clean which made it pretty hard to make it through the initial heats. Leading into the afternoon, peaks became a little harder to come across-but those with the local knowledge made the most of what was available.

The conditions began to diminish leading into the finals but the level of surfing only grew with some pretty high combinations being put together in all divisions. Overall the day was a huge success and looks to get even better as the year goes on. A big shout out goes to all the clubs members for making it all possible

Dont forget that this weekend, Duranbah plays host to the first state round for QAB as well as the Rheopaipo Pro. All the action kicks off on Friday so make sure you get down there to show your support, as well as catching up with some of your favourite riders. Also good luck to all our club members competing
