Dear Diary….by Adrian Harper

Hey Everyone,

Here’s a little wrap up from my trip up to the Gold Coast last week.

So Max Arent, filmer Will Hodgett & I left Tuesday and headed North on our way to the Gold Coast, the charts showed that there was a good swell and wind combo about to hit-and Straddie was looking to be all time.We stopped off in Port Macquarie for a little surf at North Wall, scored a few fun waves-but we were on a tight schedule so it was back on the road ASAP.By 8pm on Tuesday night we had finally made it to the Gold Coast, we stayed the night with photographer Matt Ryan. The next morning we got up and headed to Straddie with high hopes, only to find a packed car park and onshore wind. The vibes were terrible, but we hung and around because an afternoon change of offshore winds was predicted. Around 1pm we paddled over to find perfect pits and bowls. We pretty much surfed until it got dark…Next day once again we headed to Straddie, only to find about 500 people surfing it. So we jumped back in the car in search for somewhere less crowded. After an hour or so we ended up surfing the Reef, near Kingscliff. It was fun but nothing special. After a little hour surf we came back to find our car had been broken into and all our phones and wallets stolen. Pretty much turned into the worst day ever, after filing a police report it was back to Matts place where we decided to cut our losses and head home.On the way down we spoke to Chris James who said Newy looked like it would be good tomorrow, so we headed there and stayed the night at his.Next morning we got up and headed down to try some tow outs with Chris and Wilo’s ski. Unfortunately the conditions were not perfect which made it very hard for tow outs. But it was a good experience. After that it was off to a little secret wave were we scored some nice pits, it was easily the highlight of the trip. Kind of a good way to end a fair negative trip.
