Interview: Dallas Singer BSC Avalon Pro

2008 Av Comp Dallas

Dallas Singer will be competing in the upcoming BSC Avalon Pro on the 17th – 19th July at Avalon on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. With the Shark Island Challenge waiting period being from the 1st – 20th July, it is sure to be a busy month for Dallas. Here is a quick interview on what he’s been up to lately.

Give us a quick run down on what you’ve been up to the last month or two, bodyboarding related or not:

righto the last month or two…. ive picked up a few new sponsors this year which has been ace, firstly being BSC, which has been sick so far, all the team are mad guys and the staff at both the narra and qld stores are legends also. I recently sign with dunes wetsuits, who have kept me warm so far this winter, especially on a trip i did to victoria a week back., im loving the suits and the new colours have done wonders to my appearance in the water. Finally, i just done a deal with Todd and Dav at I AM NONE clothing. their clothing is really top notch, they take pride in everything they do and their product reflects that. Also being an aspiring graphic designer i feel as thou i’m learning from them as much as i’m promoting their clothing. Apart from selling myself off the bodyboard industry ive been surfing how i want to, ive been surfing waves that i enjoy most and with the people who make me a better rider. I always try and have fun whenever i bodyboard, thats why i started and thats why ill continue to do it.

Who do you think has been ripping lately?

gezz soo many people. On a recent trip i did with a bloke named Chris James, he really impressed me. He really is a stand out rider, well balanced in all conditions and an absolute hell man in the big sucky stuff. Apart from that i love the way Bp is riding, Buntos and novy both shred the bag also. oh shit im starting to froth out a bit huh, i better leave it at that.

You seem to be one of the new gen riders that is pushing the limits and putting your own variation to moves in the air. Do you see yourself as someone that is leading the pack or trying to keep up?

ummmmmmmmmmmmmmm, how bout keeping up to lead the pack? is that an honest answer? i dunno, i just love the versitility of bodyboarding. and if riders cant see that, their usually going to be the ones trying to keep up.

Do you have any special combos you bust out especially for the competition arena?

I’ve got ideas flying through my head everyday in terms of what can be done on a bodyboard. but yeah i love to think ill be able to start landing a legit new move by the end of the year, something i can call my own. I gave you no info at all their didnt i? and i didnt really answer your question either..hahahaha.

Do you try and get your self in a certain frame of mind when competing? Any tips you can give all the aspiring groms out there?

Competing in anything is stressful you cant help that, if you dont get nervous before a contest either you dont want to win or you dont want to be there. i always just think about how mad this sport is and why i love doing it so much while im competing, that usually calms me down a bit, then i try to surf how i would any other day. Just good clean surfing, thats what people and judges want to see.

It seems that Europeans and South Americans are becoming more and more prominent in bodyboarding, do you think they are slowly stealing the limelight away from Aussie bodyboarders? If so, what do you think of it?

Depends where the ‘limelight’ is coming from, I still believe every aussie grom would still see our riders as being the best in the world. The euro and sth american push has had alot to do with the IBA world tour, but the tour doesnt get that much publicity anywhere still. And until it does riders such as Uri and Magno will go nearly unknown to kids here in Aus. They do deserve their praise thou, some amazing competitors have come out of these counties lately.

Finally, who looks after you for equipment in and out of the water?

B S C beeee-atch and dont you forget!

BSC and Nomad FSD team rider Chris James has been handed a wildcard entry into the prestigious Shark Island Challenge!

Big Griz has built a solid reputation as one of Australia’s leading big wave free surfers and this caps off an extraordinary 12 months for him. Following on from last years breakthrough ROAM project, Chris then spent “40 days travelling around the World”, taking in the Philippines, Ireland, San Diego Wave house, and Mexico. Good luck Griz!!

Chris, along with FSD compatriots Matt Lackey and Glen Thurston have been busy the last 6 months surfing the best waves Oz has to offer filming the new Nomad film project, ROAM 2. Once again Bryce Thurston is behind the lens capturing the most amazing angles in High Definition, and the crew have many memorable sessions already in the can and the photos to feature in Australia’s 2 premiere bodyboard mags shortly. GCBC Results for Event 5

GCBC Results for Event 5

Sunday 8th of June hosted Event 5 for Gold Coast Bodyboard Club-this time with a floating location. Just north of the Burleigh Heads Surf Club was the chosen destination to make the most of what little conditions that were around. The early heats were held in some clean yet small shoreys, which the DK riders seemed to handle really well. As the tide began to change so did the swell and the winds throwing up some bigger but bumpier rides. The major highlight of the day again was the tight race for the Opens Division between our own Corey McLean and Tom Rigby, and Brunswick Heads grommet Sam Boulton.
In the end-Corey out-comboed the rest on his way to 1st place in the final, with Tom following in 2nd and Sam in 3rd.
GCBC is now past the half way point on the calender, so points are becoming more vital for each competitor, especially for those in the Opens Division-as the overall winner will walk away with a return trip to Hawaii!!
Next round of GCBC is set for the 13th of July at the Spit, so don’t forget about that. Also as you all know-the last round of QAB was postponed due to wild conditions, but it will still go ahead. So keep an eye out for confirmation dates via the QAB website www.qabonline.com

“Chris James, Gold Coast”

“Chris James, Gold Coast”
BSC Team rider has been calling the Gold Coast home for the last few weeks. Escaping the fast paced life that is Sydney, Chris decided to get away from it all and live it in Surfers Paradise. In between steaming hot saunas and lengthy beach runs he managed to score to fun waves at Snapper during the recent storm and also some descent bowl sections at Straddie. “Its so good to get away from home when the waves are bad-otherwise you end up going insane creeping out on MYSPACE” Chris’s new board range will be set to arrive in store over the next few months-so stay tuned…..
