QAB Round 2

QAB Round 2.
This weekend, Ann Street at Dicky’s Beach Sunshine Coast will host the second state round for QAB. After a very heated round #1 there are so many competitors keen to secure their spot on the up and coming Nationals Event. The conditions are looking better than expected so far with a 4ft ESE swell due to hit the banks, however the winds could prove to be hectic with some strong winds coming in from the same direction. BSC team rider Tom Rigby will be there to defend his first place in the Juniors Division, fresh back from a successful south coast trip plus his maiden trip to Luna Park. Jimmy Williamson will also be aiming high after an amazing start to the comp year with some great results in Juniors and Opens through GCBC. Dont forget-if you are competing you much meet at the Buderim Street Carpark at 6:30am. For any further information, you can call Johanne Robinson on 0423 771 450 or contact BSC Gold Coast on (07)5536 5531

Duranbah

Small but fun waves greeted us for our May comp but the cadets and juniors provided plenty of action in the early rounds before conditions deteriorated with the change of tide and gusty winds. Our up and coming Junior, Jimmy Williamson, relished in the conditions to be placed 1st in Juniors and 4th in Open Division and against all odds continued to seal the deal as a force to be reckoned with. Jimmy had his board stolen from a mates car last week and was riding a borrowed board. Keep up the good work Jimmy and let’s hope who ever stole your board has the intestinal fortitude (guts) to own up.

DK also provided some excitement in the early rounds with some very close scores and a fantastic 4 way tussle in the final between Stevie Lloyd, Dane (Poppy) Pope, Adam Rose and Tom MacFarlane. It was a close finish with Dane snapping at the heels of Stevie all the way. Well done to all of you for a great performance in such challenging conditions.

The form in Opens is also hotting up with the Trip to Hawaii up for grabs with many riders in contention. Who will win? Who will receive the prize from Bodyboaders Surf Co @ Coolangatta? Stay tuned!

Remember: QAB Round 2 – 31st May – 1st June – Entries close 17th May.

A big thanks to all helpers on the day and once again thanks to those parents who gave up their time on Mother’s Day to make our May comp successful.
Judging still proves to be an issue with the same people giving up their time to ensure a smooth running event. Everyone needs to remember that if it were not for these people there would be no comp and all must put in some time in the judging tent. I do not want to have to consider a roster system so please consider your responsibility.

BSC gift vouchers this month were awarded to the winners and runners up in each division with results being:-

Dylan McAskil

The No. 6 Brett Young Trials 2008

No 6 Trials SI 2008

The No. 6 Brett Young Trials

The gateway to the Human Cronulla Shark Island Challenge.

June 27th – 29th Cronulla. NSW.

Trials will be hotly contested…

For the first time in the events history the Human Shark Island Challenge will feature all of the elite IBA Top 16.

In the past the waiting period has been a deterrent for International competitors but 2008 will herald a new formula and a shorter waiting period.

“ The waiting period has been trimmed down to just 20 days” said IBA International General Manager Terry McKenna.

“ This is less than half the time that the event has had in the past but we are confident that this time of the year will serve up some of the epic conditions that are required for what is considered to be the best competition on the planet”.

Local riders Dave Ballard and Christian Ricco have secured the local wildcards and will not have to contest the trials.

Sponsors wildcards include Big wave charger Chris James and Newcastle’s Garth McGregor.

Garth McGregor is enjoying a massive comeback to the sport after almost a decade away from the spotlight and is still regarded as one of the most powerful riders in the world.

McGregor has had several front covers in 2008 and has also secured a new sponsor and his own model. In his own words he is “Stoked”.

“ I can’t wait mate. I have only surfed the Island a few times but I love the joint. So stoked that I am going to have a crack at the main event, it’s always been a dream” said an elated McGregor.

With the top 16 and the four wildcards straight into the main event ( July 1st – 20th ) the Number 6 trials are expected to be stacked with talent.

Riders from over 9 countries will be lining up against the best in Australia. An expected field of around 130 will contest the three-day event set down for June 27th – 29th at Cronulla Point.

SCIENCE LIMITED EDITION RELEASE

science press may 08

Mike Stewart Science is proud to announce the release of the MS 1 LTD and the LTD.

Both of these boards feature a world first for the industry: The Compression Cell. The Compression Cells are soft impact absorbing cells held in a structural Polypropylene core matrix. The compression cells are placed under the elbows and in strategic areas of the board prone to impact.

science press may 08 1

The decks of all LTD boards feature a semi-transparent deck that reveals the Compression Cells configuration. The additional function of the cells is to provide greater traction on the deck without the necessity of wax. The slightly raised convex cells provide a subtle yet effective grip on the body.

science press may 08 2

Science Brand manager Chris Apps said “ We are extremely excited about the release of this innovation as it is a another first for the industry, and will give riders that extra cushion that is nice to have when landing big air moves”.

Both the MS1 and the TR model are each custom tuned specific to the size of the board. Elbow cups, hip grooves, and all deck contours are specifically placed to accommodate the size of the board being made. As the boards get longer, these
contours are moved to accommodate larger body measurements.

All Mike Stewart Science boards also feature RTI, Real Time Innovation. As boards are modified and improved in testing, we immediately implement proven changes into production models. This means that you are getting the latest improvements in our products, it is not necessary to wait until the new years models come out for the latest performance technology.

Mike Stewart Science is owned and operated by Mike Stewart. LTD models will be available in stores worldwide in 2008. For further information, contact JPI Pty Ltd on (07) 56658333.

Matt Lackey and Simon Ormerod report from Brazil!

Brazil May 08 1

April 26th 2008: So far its all good over here in the land of the round and brown, HA HA! I haven’t caught any STD’s yet-its funny really, we haven’t had a chance to hit the town for talent yet because we’ve had good waves most days and we all just want to get the job done while the swell’s still around. Matt and I met up with some chicks last night but it didn’t go too well, it really helps if you can speak Portuguese too because its impossible to tune without any vocabulary. I wish you all could see the wedges we got yesterday, you have no idea-it was mammoth(see attached photos)!! Matt and I had to scrape under a couple that were easy 15ft top to bottom kegs! Just big drops but got some pretty cool shots…. Other than that we’ve had some fun smaller wedges about 3-4ft and a big hectic Keiki style shorebreak which worked out good for the fisheye.

Brazil May 08 2

May 5th 2008: Well, Simon & I are here in Brazil-waves have been pumping, This is now my 6th visit here and I would have to say for waves-this trip was one of my best! Photographer Ben Decamp came down to shoot, so we have been busy everyday trying to make the most of the waves. Im currently walking like a peg legged pirate, the reasoning-a surfer decided to leave his board floating on the inside. So as I was in the barrel I collected the thing with my knee!! Cut me open like a medical trial patient, and left huge swelling and bruising around my knee…so im out for a while.
Simon & I went to the soccer last week with all time legend Guilherme Tamega, a finals match between Flamango and Botofogo(I dont even know what that stands for). It was a life changing experience to say the least, I dont love soccer myself but it was just amazing to see how crazy these Brazilians go over the sport!!

WBA event 2 - Girls go wild and Kira takes all at event no.2!

WBA event 2

April 18th, Box Beach , Nelson Bay

Girls go wild and Kira takes all at event no.2!

WBA event no. 2 came close to being postponed, when everyone woke up early to find the weather wild and the waves trashy on the morning of the 18th.

However, the call was made to hold the event anyway, and it seemed mother nature was on our side because as the girls rocked up, the clouds parted, the winds dropped, and the sun came out and put a smile on everyone’s face!

After a few hold ups, we eventually got underway around 10am.

The surf was a little lumpy, but Boxy was still producing some fun 3-4ft left hand wedges, with sections that were just begging to be hit!

The girls were all over it, with Kira Lewellyn, Emma Cobb, Zoe Edwards, Monique Farmer, Lauren Williams, Kaitlin Murphy, and Lauren Knowles joining up with a couple of the local boys, plus the team Turbo boys (who were in the area at the time), for a fun pre-comp surf.

First out in the competition were the AAA girls semis, with 2005 world champ, Kira Llewellyn clearly loving the Boxy wedge sections. Lauren Knowles, Nicole Fleming and Emma Cobb also surfed solidly in their semis, knocking out Lilly Pollard, Emma Roby, Kaitlin Murphy and Lauren Williams on their way to the final.

Without a hooter system the girls were forced to find another way to sound the start and finish of heats… The cliffs of Boxy echoed throughout the day with wild screams and whistles and some other random noises that were sure to upset the local wildlife. The flag system was very unique as well, Monique “Flare” Farmer took it upon herself to ride the flag rather than wave it, and galloped it along the beach with to indicate the start and finish of heats.

The AA girls were sent out for a straight out 5 girl final around lunch time.

Monique was the definite stand out of the AA division at this event. Moni picked off the bigger, better shaped waves, busted some nice spins and a good roll, and even managed to score a moment of tube time!

The rest of the placings were super close, and a difficult count back decided the final result. Ellie Wilkinson made her mission down from Port Macquarie a worthy venture, coming in at 2nd place, with Zoe Edwards 3rd, Jacqui Steward 4th, and local lass Karleah Lang 5th.

In the AAA final, Kira looked unstoppable, busting out every move in the book –inverts, ARS’s, big rolls, spins, and even popping an air reverse. Most of Kira’s scores were above 8’s. It was inspiring for everyone to watch.

Lauren Knowles and Emma Cobb also stepped it up a notch and boosted some really solid rolls on the sucky hollow sections that low tide Boxy produces. All 4 girls in the final attempted some solid inverts but unfortunately came unstuck on the landing, with the Tassie Devil –Nicole Fleming- going for the biggest boost of them all… If only she landed it.

With the surf conditions a little rough this day, the two A division girls chose not to compete, but Tayla Zannis and Taylor Jackson still had loads of fun hanging with all the girls.

The flipper race proved to be a lot of fun, with the rules being -there are no rules… So the girls got a bit rough, and ready… Kaitlin “Wombat” and Tassie took it upon themselves to tackle any girls that looked like winning… It was carnage.

Kira however, proved to be absolutely impossible to take down. Tassie made a pretty good attempt at a tackle, but merely bounced straight off her. Kira 1, Tassie 0… And Kira wins yet another challenge! The prize –a pair of Propel fins, and Kira being a good sport kindly gave them to Port Mac grom, Ellie.

The beach BBQ was pounced on by all the girls and some random boys too, with $2 sandwiches helping raise some $$ for the WBA club. During which, the topic as to whether anyone would eat a raw egg was brought up. Kira, typically up for any challenge gave it a go.

The results were disgusting, but definitely entertaining. Check the photos for proof.

Raffle time, and the event 2 winner of the Manta mist bodyboard was A division grom, Tayla Zannis!
