20th April 2008

Duranbah – 20/04/2008

It was hard to wake early and head back to D’Bah for our April comp on the back of a huge weekend last weekend with the 1st round of QAB and the 2nd round of the Pro Tour, especially in the cold and wet conditions, but I spoke to the weather man early and he assured me the rain would clear and I could expect 3-4ft consistent swell and D’Bah would be pump’n on the dropping tide.

He was right but the conditions or backing up for another weekend had either frightened some or beckoned for a late sleep in. Numbers were down on our start to the season but it made for a reasonable finish time and home in time unpack and chill a little.

The diehards were there to take it on and also to vie for the 2 Cory Mclean Signature Boards up for grabs, thanks to Glen Edwards @ Unknown Bodyboards. Two boards were made available throughout the comp for anyone to try and used they were both in the competition itself and also to free surf. This gave the riders an opportunity to try something new and test their skills with an “Unknown” board. Thanks again to Team “Unknown”, keep up the good work.

The boards were awarded to:-

Martin Schmidt – Martin is at every comp and competes in DK and sometimes Open’s. He is always there to help set up, judge, show his culinary expertise at the BBQ and there to pack up at the end of the day. Congrats Martin, we all hope you enjoy your new board.

The second board went to:-

Casey Redden – Casey and his brother Tiernan are also at every comp and compete in Men’s and Juniors respectively. Both boys are always willing to help and always polite. Casey stood up to the daunting conditions today, but unfortunately the elements got the better of his board today and it was the first time I have seen a board snap in half. (Awesome). Congrats Casey and enjoy your new ride.

The standard was lifted today with some huge sets rolling through we saw some high scoring waves across all divisions which also made for a very vocal crowd. The first high score of the day went to Thorpe Waluew with a 9.5 in his Cadets heat, Jimmy Williamson a 9.5 in his Junior semi, Tom Rigby a 9.5 in the Open Final and Cory McLean with a perfect 10 in his Open semi. Awesome stuff guys you certainly entertained us all.

Bodyboarders Surf Co gift vouchers were awarded to winners in each division and our encouragement awards went to:-

Fathers and son team, Dave and Stuart Law, for their skills at the BBQ. You cooked up a storm and thanks heaps for your support.

And

James Newton – James always attends to compete but is always on hand to help out with judging and support the club in any way possible. Thanks James and we hope you all enjoy spending your vouchers.

Thanks also to Mick and Ben from BSC Coolangatta for their continued support.

Note – Round 2 of QAB will be held on the Sunshine Coast on May 31st. Get your entries in early as they close on May 17th. Entries are available in downloads of the QAB website.
