20th April 2008

Duranbah – 20/04/2008

It was hard to wake early and head back to D’Bah for our April comp on the back of a huge weekend last weekend with the 1st round of QAB and the 2nd round of the Pro Tour, especially in the cold and wet conditions, but I spoke to the weather man early and he assured me the rain would clear and I could expect 3-4ft consistent swell and D’Bah would be pump’n on the dropping tide.

He was right but the conditions or backing up for another weekend had either frightened some or beckoned for a late sleep in. Numbers were down on our start to the season but it made for a reasonable finish time and home in time unpack and chill a little.

The diehards were there to take it on and also to vie for the 2 Cory Mclean Signature Boards up for grabs, thanks to Glen Edwards @ Unknown Bodyboards. Two boards were made available throughout the comp for anyone to try and used they were both in the competition itself and also to free surf. This gave the riders an opportunity to try something new and test their skills with an “Unknown” board. Thanks again to Team “Unknown”, keep up the good work.

The boards were awarded to:-

Martin Schmidt – Martin is at every comp and competes in DK and sometimes Open’s. He is always there to help set up, judge, show his culinary expertise at the BBQ and there to pack up at the end of the day. Congrats Martin, we all hope you enjoy your new board.

The second board went to:-

Casey Redden – Casey and his brother Tiernan are also at every comp and compete in Men’s and Juniors respectively. Both boys are always willing to help and always polite. Casey stood up to the daunting conditions today, but unfortunately the elements got the better of his board today and it was the first time I have seen a board snap in half. (Awesome). Congrats Casey and enjoy your new ride.

The standard was lifted today with some huge sets rolling through we saw some high scoring waves across all divisions which also made for a very vocal crowd. The first high score of the day went to Thorpe Waluew with a 9.5 in his Cadets heat, Jimmy Williamson a 9.5 in his Junior semi, Tom Rigby a 9.5 in the Open Final and Cory McLean with a perfect 10 in his Open semi. Awesome stuff guys you certainly entertained us all.

Bodyboarders Surf Co gift vouchers were awarded to winners in each division and our encouragement awards went to:-

Fathers and son team, Dave and Stuart Law, for their skills at the BBQ. You cooked up a storm and thanks heaps for your support.

And

James Newton – James always attends to compete but is always on hand to help out with judging and support the club in any way possible. Thanks James and we hope you all enjoy spending your vouchers.

Thanks also to Mick and Ben from BSC Coolangatta for their continued support.

Note – Round 2 of QAB will be held on the Sunshine Coast on May 31st. Get your entries in early as they close on May 17th. Entries are available in downloads of the QAB website.

McLean sweeps the competition away…

Saturday 20th April was on the calendar for staging the 3rd Round of the Gold Coast Bodyboard Club. Following up from the previous weekend with DBAH hosting the Rheo Pro & QAB State Round 1, it seems the infamous beachie was still in the mood for dishing out some heavy waves. Although the weather backdrop wasn’t ideal with early winds and temperatures worthy of winters on the South Coast-the swell was pushing 5ft sets with the dropping tide. Not all competitors were keen to take it on, instead deciding to stay at home in bed-but those who did had plenty of barrels and bowl sections to play with. The bigger stand outs for the day came from some of our very own team riders with big individual wave scores, Jimmy Williamson got a 9.5 in his Junior Semi Final, Tom Rigby with a 9.5 in the Opens Final and Corey McLean with a
perfect 10 in his Opens Semi with a barrel to roll to air reverse combo(nuts)!!

Corey McLean 24Apr08 1

Not to disappoint in any way these three guys all finished real well at the end of it all, Jimmy came 3rd overall in Juniors, Tom came 1st in Juniors and 3rd in Opens, and Corey stole the show with a 3rd in DK(what) and took out the Opens in what was by far the closest and toughest final, if not heat to be seen all year over Brunswick Heads ripper Sam Boulton.
Major sponsor, BSC have put a trip to Hawaii up for grabs to the overall winner of the Opens Division at the end of the year-and so far the gap is so close between our own Corey and Tom, then Sam Boulton!!

The next round will be held on the 11th of May once again at DBAH.

Winny Flies to victory at Newy…

Winny Flies to victory at Newy…

Northern beaches rider and BSC Team Rider Dave Winchester has claimed victory in the Third round of the Human Pro Bodyboard Tour, The Rheopaipo Pro at Nobby’s bank in Newcastle. Winny looked to be the man to beat with some amazing performances leading into the final and he saved the best till last when he nailed a high flying ARS in the opening minutes to show his opposition that he really means business.
Defending Champion Brad Jackson (Central Coast) looked determined to claim back-to-back victories but had to settle for second when Winchester backed up his early high score with a 9.0 late in the 30 minute final. Ratings leader Mitch Rawlins (Qld) looked like he was in fine touch in the lead-up rounds but seemed to struggle to match the brilliance of his earlier performances and had to settle for a third. Fellow Queenslander Joe Clarke finished off a good start to his rookie year on Tour finishing in last place in the four man final. “ I am stoked. The waves today allowed for high performance Bodyboarding and this venue was awesome” said an elated Winchester.
“ I am looking forward to Warnambool in Victoria in late May”

Rheo Newy Pro 08 1

In the Pro Women’s division former World champion Kira Llewellyn (Qld) edged out Lilly Pollard (NSW) with Kaitlin Murphy (NSW) finishing third and local Lauren Knowles in fourth. “ It must have been so close between Lilly and I. She got some great waves and I knew that I had to dig deep to win this event”.

Nathan Graham completed a great comeback to the competition arena with a victory in the Pro DK event.

The first round of the NSW State titles was also completed and results are as follows.
Grand Masters – Greg Webster
Masters – Wayne Holt
Senior Mens – Sam Burres
Grommets – Kieren Schuck
Cadets – Cameron Simms
Juniors – Chase O’Leary
Open Women- Emma Cobb
Junior Women – Ellie Wilkinson
Open Men – Simon Cowan

Rheo Newy Pro 08 2

The second round of the NSW State titles will be contested at Avalon in late July and that will determine the NSW team for the Human Australasian Bodyboarding Titles at Port MacQuarie in September.

The next round of the Pro Tour will be in Victoria in May. More info and pic’s at www.ibaaustralasia.com

BSC Free Film Night Rundown

Saturday the 19th was set to be a massive night on the Gold Coast for BSC, however mother nature had other ideas. At the Coolangatta shop the plan was to host a massive outdoor free screening for a few recently released films: “Outrageous Behaviour” by Jack Dobinson & Garreth Shrubb and “Us Here Now” by Gavin Howells & Tim Fowler. Instead of clear skies and warm autumn breezes, we were handed out a solid downpour of rain, and temperatures worthy of the Arctic.

Film night Apr08 1
Regardless of all that we still got a pretty good turnout, with close to sixty people filling up whatever confined spaces we had to work with. One lucky viewer even went home with more than just a cold as the winner of our lucky door prize, a personally signed Custom X Simon Ormerod Board. Both films received great reviews for their own reasons-“Outrageous Behaviour” for possibly the best soundtrack seen to date in a bodyboarding film, and to “Us Here Now” for its crazy Philippines section where Timmy Fowler himself managed to break his leg on a massive bowl section.
Film night Apr08 2
Don’t forget that you can purchase both of these films in store at BSC or from our online shop, and finally-a big thanks you to everyone who showed up, including our team riders-Corey McLean, Nick Ormerod, Tom Rigby & Jimmy Williamson despite how cold it was!!

Plastic People promo rundown…

The weekend just passed was by far the biggest we’ve had this year in terms of bodyboarding on the Gold Coast. With so many comps and parties to attend to, BSC still managed to find time to hook up an in-store promo with the guys from Plastic People, whom are in the middle of their Australian Hellfire Tour. On Saturday morning at 11am we set up tables out front and let the riders sit down to sign their lives away. With the likes of 2X World Champion Andre Botha, Toby Player, Anthony Savoji, Dave Crowley, our own Simon Ormerod and super-grom Sam Strachan in attendance there was definitely no shortage of fans around.

Plastic People Promo1

In true BSC style there was a heap of goodies to give away including a signed Morey Botha which went to the overall winner of our gruelling round by round Arm Wrestling Tournament. Not to fall away from our boot camp ways either, we also gave away a signed BZ Player to who ever pushed their endurance skills the hardest in the 1KM sprint through the busy streets of Coolangatta. There was also boxes full of Plastic People gear handed out including shirts, signed posters, stickers and even some prophylactics -but that’s another story all together.

Plastic People Promo2

In closing it was an amazing turn out, so I want to push a big shout out to all the guys from Plastic People, especially Chuck, without you-this promo would have never happened. Also to the Sterling and Christine from Wahoo’s Fish Taco for providing one of the most amazing banquets you could imagine, Luke from our Narrabeen shop for flying up to help out over the whole weekend-your work ethic is just far beyond, and finally to all the guys and girls out there who came along!

Rawlins rockets to lead…

Round two of the Human Pro Bodyboard Tour “The Reopaipo Qld Pro” has been run and won by Mitch Rawlins.Mitch just managed to edge out an in-form Dave Winchester with Port Macquarie’s Eric Metcalf in third and Gold coaster Nick Ormerod in fourth.

Rheo QLD Comp 08 Rawlins

The event was blessed with some awesome conditions and on the final day D-Bah served up it’s trademark slabbing peaks for the sports best to put on a great show.

Leading into the finals the action peaked with an amazing round 4 clash between Mitch Rawlins, Dave Crowley, Peter Norman and Joe Clarke.

The level of competitive Bodyboarding was raised significantly as each rider locked in score after score to notch their names in the history books as the highest scoring heat in BBA history with Crowley missing out in third with a 9.0 and an 8.9.

bsc-rheo-comp-08-mens-winne.jpg

The Pro Women’s division also had a world class field with international rider Eunate Agirre (Spain) and Paola Simao (Brazil) outclassed by the Aussies.

Former World champs Kira Llewellyn and Steph Pettersen used all their competitive skills so surf their way into the final and take on Lilly Pollard and Mandy Zeiran.

In the end Kira proved too strong and pushed Lilly to second with Mandy third and Steph fourth.

Rheo QLD Comp 08 Women WInners

In the Pro DK division Gary Thatcher made a welcome return to competition with a win over fellow Queenslanders Dane Pope, Lucas Winfield and Nathan Luton – Korber.

The QAB round was also a great success with around 80 of the best amateurs in the state all vying for valuable points towards the Nationals team at Port Macquarie in September.
In the end all agreed that it was a great contest and the venue lends itself to a much bigger and more lucrative event in 2009.

Rheo QLD Comp 08 Judges

Next stop – Reopaipo Newcastle Pro. This event starts on Thursday this week.
